I saw this and thought this raised a big dialemma:

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/05/10/nhindu10.xml

As a Hindu, cows are sacred, and you would obviously not want the cow to be killed. But the cow threatens to infect the public, and creates a danger to the community.

Does public health take priority over religious belief?

Just a quick throw-away because I'm all typed-out:

Jesus, the utmost in holy beings for Xians died for the sake of humanity, surely if they kill the cow it is for a similar (though not quite so extensive) purpose - the saving of lives?

just thought I'd jump in with some random theology!

How could they make it look like the cow is dying for our sins? But i guess it is saving lives by not giving everyone TB.

Exactly.

How could they make it look like the cow is dying for our sins?

Not exactly what I meant (please be nice; I was very tired when I made that first post and my brain was dying Wink )

More that I was showing that death is not necessarily an evil (no I am not condoning murder or animal slaughter), and they could at least uphold their respect for the great cow by glorifying its martyrdom!

OK I'll try to be serious now. I think that no, it shouldn't be killed just because if this risk. You wouldn't behead the Archbishop of Canterbury or the Pope would you? But then that is because I thik animals and humans have equal rights, and I foresee now Gantidge and myself taking this debate off on a tangent about animal rights ... Wink

I thought about it a bit more and it seems easy for them to kill a cow with TB but not to kill a human with TB.

I thought about it a bit more and it seems easy for them to kill a cow with TB but not to kill a human with TB.

But why is that? Because the cow can't defend itself? Are they preying on the weak? I think there has to be equality somewhere:

1) If they kill the cow with tb as it is a threat, humans deserve the same.

OR (my preference)

2) A human with tb would be cared for, so treat the cow as such.

Animal rights!!!

One thing ok?: both have rights, but the rights of humans are more important than animal rights. The cow has a right to live, as long as it doesn't conflict with any human's right the life, which in this case it seems to. I think communialism and society are more important than religion.

But why? Why should the cow's life be any less valuable? You speciesist!

Ha! We're still on topic too! Wink

Cows aren't as important as human lives. I am a speciesist; sorry for being prejudiced against my own species!

Fine, you want a serious answer?

OMG... I can't even finish my scientology-excuse, it's just too ridiculous!

I don't know why. But I'd rather a cow die than a human. In fact I'd rather a field of cows die than a human. It's just my gut feeling. There'll be some justification. Quick! Someone help me! I'm drowning...

That's the one. My finger slipped...

How about "Cows are made of meat therefore I want them to be dead before I eat them"

I'll admit it's not much use to a Hindu but then I am not one! (A cow or a Hindu!)

or

"Humans are worth more than cows because humans are clever and eat cows and can hold conversations, all cows can do is eat, fart and die!"

Question begging. I pose the exact same question.

"Humans are worth more than cows because humans are clever and eat cows and can hold conversations, all cows can do is eat, fart and die!"

So what you're saying is that the value of a being's life depends on its intelligence?
