Surely its true that this is only going to be used against anti social behavior but thats not to say it can't be used for other things. If we provide a corrupt government with the ability to remove freedoms like free speech etc using a system that is designed to enforce responsibilities then we run the risk of, in ten years or so a Big Brother society emerging. If you add speakers in a years time you will add microphones causing a situation where the people are too afraid to speak political oposition in case the cameras catch them.

The original cameras we designed as an Audit device, to track bad behavior, find who did it and punish them. Now they are being used as a deterrant instead but I ask you how will this deter them who shoot at police and rob stores. Surely they won't be scared of a simple little voice and having the voice shouting will only alert them to the fact that the police could be on the way. This would actually hinder the law from being enforced. Surely a person monitoring a video only camera and alerting the police to a dangerous situation would be the best compromise

i just came across this on slash.dot, forget camera's with speakers, what about a camera with lip reading technolgy that could understand what you are saying?

Quote Slashdot
"mrogers sends us to Infowars for the following news from the UK, "which is fast becoming the front line of the war on privacy":
"'Read my lips..."' used to be a figurative saying. Now the British government is considering taking it literally by adding lip reading technology to some of the four million or so surveillance cameras in order identify terrorists and criminals by watching what everyone says. Perhaps the lip-reading cameras and the shouting cameras will find something to talk about.""

doesn't the person controlling the cameras hear the people outside anyway? But i do think lip reading technology would be easier.

The cameras with the lip reading sensors would not be operated by a man, they would be operated by a computer, and when a camera picked up someone saying 'blow up the houses of lords' for example then it would monitor that persons movments and other conversations.

personally i think the lip reading cams will fail, after all how many times have i mentioned 'blowing things up' and 'killing people' so think the system would flag up to many people who are meerly talking and not ploting a terroist attack (and after all, how many terrorist attacks are planed in open public streets?)

Not to mention the likes of me and my friends, who, when in the vacinity of such a camera would walk along saying "Jihad, Bomb, Terrorist, Allah, Western Scum, Inifdel" etc etc etc in much the same way as we do by email, just to trigger watch words Wink

You could play music through it to scare people too. Some really violent song to scare off boozing chavs.

But that is noise pollution, I presume you were joking?

Yes. I was joking. But you could pipe subliminal messaging through! Or some James Blunt; that would make me get as far away from the camera as possible! (Again, more jokes.)

Jokes? That actually would make me run from the camera! But I think it's fair to conclude that noise pollution isn't a risk here.

Jokes about the messaging not Blunt! I was serious about Blunt. Throw in a little Artic Monkeys and you could clear Brixton in seconds.

Good. Now that we've established that...any other merits to this idea? I still think it's good in theory but impractical in...well...practice!

i can't imagine a lot of people being able to lip read, anyways the speaking cameras i think are a good idea but i imagine they are expensive.
