"The UK government is planning to stop funding a study to understand obesity in children. The study fits children with accelerometers to measure how much energy each child uses in a day by moving. The results are surprising. Those children who do sports at school do not burn more calories than those who don't. Furthermore there is no correlation between body mass index and the number of calories used! The results are very interesting, suggesting that genetics and diet are the main reasons for childhood obesity, not sport. The UK government is trying to increase the amount of sport in schools."

I find it hard to see how you can fail to burn more calories when you do sport, and rather hypocritial for the goverment to try and incresse sport at school and at the same time cut funding to reserch like this that says sport has nothing to do with the weight problem in the UK's children

That result is hardly surprising, as you'd expect that sport plays a smaller part in obesity than diet or genetics. You don't have to play sports to stay slim.

Its definately genetics. I am going to take myself for example. I have a high mentabilism and i find it very hard to put on weight which is what i generally want to do but no biggy. But i can lose weight easy.

For some people it maybe the other way around, we don't all have the same mentablism.

Not many people here have a mentablism.

On the other hand, we do have metabolism, maybe that's what you mean? ;p

Frankly, sport isn't going to hurt anyone, and it's not like we play sports purely to lose weight. It also teaches co-ordination, co-operation, agility, endurance, persistance, the list goes on. Plus it's fun.

Surely you forgot the most important one - teamwork. In this way sport is also mentally beneficial by giving participants a feeling of purpose and belonging.

Unless of course you play a sport with no teams, then there's no teamwork. So teamwork cannot be the most important.

Give me an example. I'm sure that while there may not be direct teamwork my other points still stand.

Solo sports...

Golf (a good walk ruined!)
Tennis (granted there is doubles)

and not forgetting

Football (If you are an England International!)

BTW, I too like the idea of mentablism, where can I get me some of that?! Wink

I grant you that these are certainly less teamwork-y than others, but at youth level one would still be part of a club I expect, and a pro would presumably have a manager, coach and the like so they still have the association to some extent.

Sport, expecially has also been known to be especially beneficial in deprived areas like urban areas as a socially-acceptable past-time, as well as teaching youths respect for authority, and to get along without trying to beat the snot out of each other.
I think it's fair to say we all agree sport is good. Are there actually any realistic downsides?
